Actor Sam Elliott’s voice is iconic, as is James Earl Jones’s. The deep, resonant quality of their voices, similar to Barry White’s music, is universally appealing. These men share one key trait: women love their voices.
A deep voice is a significant factor in attracting women, as it is often interpreted as more masculine and dominant. Studies have shown that women rate men with deep voices as more physically attractive and intelligent. However, many men overlook this aspect of their appeal.
Our voices are indeed something we are born with, but they are not static. Actors, singers, and voice coaches will confirm that it is possible to deepen your voice. By practicing deeper breathing and overall relaxation of the throat and vocal cord muscles, the pitch of your voice can naturally lower. Here are a few exercises to help you achieve a deeper voice over time:
Exercise #1: Breathe from your diaphragm
To get more breath support, breathe deeply from your diaphragm rather than your chest. Deep breathing should come from your belly, which expands on the in-breath and contracts during the out-breath. Place your hand on your stomach and take three deep breaths, feeling it move out then in as you breathe.
Exercise #2: The “Yawn-sigh”
This exercise relaxes your throat. Open your mouth wide as if yawning, take a deep breath, and let it out with a sigh. Repeat this three times.
Exercise #3: “Sip” breathing
Another relaxation technique, “sip” breathing involves taking a deep breath in through your nose, then pursing your lips and exhaling through your mouth in three quick bursts. This action relaxes your vocal cords by creating negative pressure and forcing them to open.
Exercise #4: Adam’s Apple pressure
This technique manipulates the pitch of your voice. Start by making an “Umm” or “Ah” sound, then lightly press two fingers against your Adam’s Apple. Your voice should deepen immediately, as this pressure loosens your vocal cords, lowering the pitch.
Men with higher-pitched voices may have associated difficulties in dating with this trait, but there are ways to address it. By practicing the exercises mentioned above, you can lower your pitch over time. If your voice is particularly high, consider working with a speech therapist or voice coach for additional guidance.
